ACT Explodes in Popularity:   Palos Verdes Peninsula Tutoring and Test Prep Center Continue to Ensure High School Students Are Prepared for College Entrance Exams

While the SAT exam has long been the most popular of college admissions tests, the ACT continues to grow in popularity and standing, nearly outpacing the College Board’s former standard-bearer. The ACT has always been a popular achievement test choice in the South West, but due to an aggressive marketing campaign, the ACT is quickly becoming the test of choice in regions where the SAT once dominated.

According to a recent report by Examiner.com, in 2015, a record 1.9 million students sat for the ACT test, ahead of the roughly 1.6 million students that took the SAT. In the past ten years alone, the popularity of the ACT has leapt by 60%, an astounding figure considering the once prevailing position the SAT held amongst U.S. students. So why the big leap in the number of ACT test takers? Apparently, it has a lot to do with the ACT’s adoption as a statewide assessment tool in 13 different states. This year the number of states sourcing the ACT for this purpose will jump to 18, and will likely grow the number of ACT college admission test takers by a significant margin.

In turn, colleges have reported a significantly increased number of submitted ACT scores as part of their admissions processes. In addition, there seems to be a trend of students taking both the SAT and the ACT and submitting their respective scores to institutions to which they are applying. Coverage by the New York Times shows that there has been a major shift in the test-taking patterns of top high school students across the country—with which leading intuitions like Princeton University take little issue. In her interview with the New York Times, Janet Rapelye, Princeton’s Dean of Admissions, was quoted as saying, “I don’t know all the pieces of why this is happening, but I think more students are trying to make sure they’ve done everything they can. And for us, more information is always better. If students choose one or the other, that’s fine, because both tests have value. But if they submit both, that generally gives us a little more information.”

It seems that prospective college candidates across the country agree with Rapelye, as students are scrambling for an edge in an increasingly competitive admissions race. For its part, the College Board’s SAT has released a revamped version of its test—perhaps to address the uptick in ACT test takers.

What is most important in preparing for both the ACT and SAT, is to have a plan, prepare in advance, and arm students with all the resources available and necessary to best showcase academic aptitude during admissions season.
